While io9.com, from whom this article is sourced, seemed quite impressed with these comic book covers I can’t say that I’m all that blown away. I love retro-future, and think it’s a great idea for a comic book cover -but shouldn’t it tie into the story or theme of the comic? I guess for a comic book cover it might be very sophisticated, but I’d rather have seen it styled as a retro-future hardware instruction manual. Gotta give Marvel kudos for trying something different though!

Not content with winning an Eisner Award for the best new series of 2008, Marvel Comics‘ Invincible Iron Man gets a stylish new look with next month’s 20th issue, designed to make the series “like a book from the future.”
Designed by Rian Hughes with input from series writer (and former member of design collective MK12) Matt Fraction, the new look for the series coincides with the launch of new storyline “Stark Disassembled,” in which Robert Downey Jr.’s favorite superhero has to come back from the loss of his armors, way of life and intelligence in the previous year-long “World’s Most Wanted” story. Fraction is excited by the way the redesign of the series’ covers will match the rebuilding of its title character:
‘Iron Man’ will look like an elegant, aggressive, and forward thinking piece of quite frankly gorgeous design. It will be a design artifact appropriate for the coffee table of any forward thinking home… ‘Invincible Iron Man’ is going to leap 10 feet off the racks. You’ll be able to see it a mile away. I’m so excited to have gotten to work with Rian.
We have to admit that the new design, mixing retro graphics with a contemporary cleanness, is miles away from the rest of Marvel’s output – fitting one of the best superhero books out there.
